Kelcy Warren Guided Energy Transfer Through the Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic hit the energy sector in ways few had prepared for, and Kelcy Warren remembers the period bluntly. “The demand crash was just a bizarre time,” he says of the early months of the outbreak, when jet fuel demand and oil demand both plummeted while natural gas held up comparatively well. For a company as large as Energy Transfer, which moves close to a third of the country’s natural gas and crude oil, the sudden drop in activity tested systems built for growth rather than contraction.

Steadying the Business Through Disruption

Energy Transfer’s diversification across oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids and refined products, a strategy Kelcy Warren had pushed for years, helped cushion some of the impact. Because different fuel streams responded differently to the crash, the company was not exposed to a single point of failure the way a purely oil focused or purely gas focused operator might have been. Warren has pointed to that balance as one reason Energy Transfer weathered the disruption without abandoning its longer term investment plans.

Keeping an Eye on What Comes Next

Even during the recovery, Kelcy Warren kept the company focused on future capital decisions. Every project at Energy Transfer must clear an internal rate of return test without relying on subsidies, including incentives created by the 2021 Inflation Reduction Act. An internal group evaluates lower carbon initiatives such as carbon dioxide pipelines for carbon capture, weighing them against traditional oil and gas projects competing for the same capital.

Warren has also talked about pursuing growth beyond U.S. borders, including in the Middle East and Latin America. “The Panama opportunity is fascinating,” he says, a sign that even after guiding Energy Transfer through one of the most disruptive stretches in its history, he remains focused on finding the next region willing to bet on his company’s pipelines.
