Michael Polk on Why the CEO Role Must Evolve

Few executives have navigated as wide a range of corporate environments as Michael Polk. With over four decades of leadership experience at global companies including Kraft, Unilever, and Newell Brands, Polk has spent his career watching the chief executive role shift beneath his feet. His conclusion: the job is changing, and leaders who fail to adapt will be left behind.

Public vs. Private Leadership

At large public companies like Unilever, Polk observed that the CEO functions primarily as a strategist and resource allocator. “The way you do that is by focusing on the strategic agenda of the company in allocating resources in a way that delivers against the strategic plan you’ve got. You’re typically working through other people and leading through other people to get things done,” he says. Additionally, investors consume a significant portion of a public company CEO’s time. Polk estimates he spent roughly thirty percent of his time with investors and public markets during those years.

After leaving Newell Brands and briefly retiring, Polk returned to work in 2019 with a different objective. He now leads Implus, a private equity-owned company where his day-to-day involvement looks nothing like his prior corporate roles. The team is younger and less seasoned, which Polk sees as an opportunity rather than a burden. “I’m doing marketing with the marketing team. I’m doing the strategic selling, the design of our selling systems, and the design of our go-to-market programs with the commercial team,” he explains. For Polk, this has been a fulfilling return to hands-on work he had not done in over two decades.

Universal Truths for Effective Leaders

Whether managing a multinational conglomerate or a leaner private operation, the mission for any CEO ultimately stays the same: create value and drive growth that endures.
