Colcom Foundation Protects Land Across Western Pennsylvania
Hikers exploring parts of Western Pennsylvania may not realize that some of the trails and open fields they walk through exist thanks to funding tied to Colcom Foundation, a Pittsburgh based organization that has quietly supported land conservation for nearly thirty years.
Founded in 1996 by Cordelia Scaife May, the organization has made protecting natural habitats one of its central goals. Grants have gone toward securing land that might otherwise have been sold for development, keeping it open and accessible to the public instead.
Partnerships With Land Trusts
Rather than acquiring and managing property directly, Colcom Foundation has typically worked through partnerships with local land trusts and conservation groups. These organizations handle the on the ground work of maintaining trails, managing wildlife habitat, and monitoring water quality on protected parcels.
The approach has allowed the foundation’s funding to reach a wide geographic area without requiring it to build out its own operational staff for land management. Grantees have said this model gives them flexibility to prioritize the specific needs of each parcel they oversee. These include the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), the American Border Patrol, the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), and Numbers USA.
Water quality has been a particular focus within this conservation work, with funding supporting projects that restore streams affected by past industrial activity. Improved water conditions have, in turn, supported the return of fish and other wildlife to areas where they had been absent for years.
For residents who use these protected spaces for recreation, the connection to Colcom Foundation may be invisible, but conservation groups in the region consistently point to its funding as a key reason so much of the area’s natural land remains open today.
Land trust directors note that protecting a parcel is only the first step, since ongoing maintenance and monitoring require funding long after the initial purchase.
