Justin Fulcher’s Palmetto Initiative Targets Coding Education
Justin Fulcher’s career has followed a pattern of tackling large, systemic problems in one field before moving on to another. After building and eventually selling a global telehealth company, he turned his attention closer to home, co-founding the Palmetto Initiative in South Carolina in 2023.
The program focuses on bringing programming education into the state’s public schools, an effort shaped in part by a visit Justin Fulcher made to Allendale, South Carolina. There he met a student named Maya who wanted to become a software engineer but attended a school that lacked the resources to support that ambition in any meaningful way.
A Personal Connection
Fulcher has written that Maya’s situation was not an isolated case but one shared by many children across South Carolina, a state where access to technical education varies widely between school districts. The Palmetto Initiative aims to close that gap by bringing coding instruction directly into classrooms that would otherwise lack it entirely.
The project draws on the same instinct that pushed Justin Fulcher to build RingMD after seeing a stark gap between available technology and basic services during his years in Southeast Asia. In both cases, his response was to build lasting infrastructure rather than simply point out the problem to someone else.
Building Locally
For Justin Fulcher, the Palmetto Initiative marks a return to South Carolina roots after years spent building companies overseas and later in Boston. He had learned to code himself at age seven, and the program reflects an effort to give other young people in his home state the same early access to programming skills that shaped his own path into entrepreneurship.
Unlike RingMD, the Palmetto Initiative operates without the pressure of investors or a global expansion timeline. Its goals are narrower and more local, focused on individual schools and individual students like Maya rather than an entire continent, but the underlying belief that access to the right tools early in life determines what someone can eventually build stayed consistent between the two very different projects.
